The BRSCC Mazda MX-5 championship has inked a deal to run on Avon Tyres from 2019.

The series for the Mk1 iteration of the classic Japanese sports car will mirror the MX-5 Super Series and MX-5 Supercup for Mk3 cars in adopting the manufacturer as it supplier of control rubber.

Championship coordinator Mandy Andrew said: “The adoption of the Mk1s moving to Avon means that we will have perfect correlation between Avon and all three of our series.”

The ZV7 tyre has been tested extensively on the Mk1 MX-5, but drivers who have remaining stock of Hankook rubber left over will be allowed a transition period to use those tyres up before making the switch.

The championship regularly attracted over 40 cars per race weekend in 2018 and is likely to continue to fill grids for many years to come.

The switch to Avon is an indicator that the BRSCC are looking to ensure that long term partnerships continue to encourage Mk1 MX-5 racers to stick with the club.

Speaking about the prospects of using Avon this term Andrew said: “We’re very much looking forward to seeing the quality of racing their new tyres will produce for us this season and beyond.”
